First Glasgow to implement new pay deal for drivers

First Glasgow’s drive for new recruits took yet another shift in gear with the announcement of a new pay deal that improves pay progression and shift payments for its employees.

The firm, which is the largest bus operator in the Glasgow area and one of the city’s biggest employers, has vacancies at its Blantyre, Overtown, Scotstoun, Dumbarton and Caledonia depots.

The new pay deal offers a starter rate of £11 per hour, which then rises to £13 per hour within 2 years. Also, First Glasgow is continuing to offer drivers with an existing Passenger Carrying Vehicle (PCV) licence a whopping £4000 joining bonus, which is paid in two parts; first £2k after 6 months and then the second payment after completion of the first year of employment.

Drivers can earn over £30,000 per year with overtime. There is the opportunity to work 4,5 and 6 day weeks in addition to more flexible part-time shifts available such as a 25-hour working week (5 hours a day) across the Greater Glasgow area.

A driving role with First Glasgow also brings a huge range of benefits, such as free bus travel for employees and their family on our buses across the UK, discounted rail travel on First operated trains including Avanti West Coast and TP Express, a pension scheme and options to invest in discounted shares in the company.

First Bus employees also benefit from a rewards programme called First Xclusives, which offers thousands of discounts on goods and services provided by massive array of online and high street retailers covering clothing, tech, food, entertainment and hospitality.

First Glasgow Head of Operations, Paul Clark, said: “We’re delighted to be able to introduce this enhanced pay deal, which ramps up pay progression and improves conditions for both new and existing drivers.

“It’s clear that people are keen to become bus drivers and serve their local communities, and it’s therefore important that we make that process as easy as possible and do everything we can to attract new talent to the industry, as well as those looking for a new challenge in the New Year.”

“Our ongoing £4,000 joining bonus for existing PCV licence holders, the offer of flexible working patterns, the improvements that our latest pay deal will deliver, as well as the roll out of our state-of-the-art zero emission electric buses, proves that there’s never been a better time to join the First Glasgow family and be part of our journey towards net-zero by 2035.”
